Posted 1/10/09 by Craig Allen
WHERE: Birds Australia National Office, 60 Leicester Street, Carlton WHEN: Thursday October 8th 8.00 pm – 9.30 pm WEB: www.birdsaustralia.com.au
The invited speakers this month are Chris Tzaros and Dean Ingwersen, Woodland Bird Conservation Project Officers at Birds Australia who both will be talking to us about:-
‘Woodland Birds for Biodiversity ’ Loss, fragmentation and degradation of south-eastern Australia’s temperate woodlands constitutes one of the most serious bird conservation issues in the country. Over 40 (one in five) species of woodland dependant birds in the south-east is threatened. Dean and Chris will discuss progress made over the past few months and summarize the tasks ahead with respect to Birds Australia’s Woodland Birds for Biodiversity Project. Through the use of the iconic and endangered Swift Parrot and Regent Honeyeater, the project is seeking to effectively engage rural communities in the protection of native habitat through ongoing landholder extension, improved farm management practices and a well-informed, prioritized and strategic covenanting program. The project builds on the momentum created by the CfoC-funded Woodland Bird Conservation project, the Swift Parrot and Regent Honeyeater recovery programs, and several linked re-vegetation projects. Monitoring of declining and threatened woodland birds will continue at selected prioritized sites across Victoria, NSW and Tasmania and provide an indication of the integrity and condition of our remnant woodlands within an agricultural landscape.
The BA Vic Conservation Committee meeting will be held prior to the Meeting at 6.30 pm in the Meeting Room at BA National Office. Come along and become involved in helping to conserve the birds of Victoria and their habitats.
Free parking is directly outside, and the venue is a 3-minute walk to public transport (Melway Ref: 2B 11D). Afterwards socialize and enjoy light refreshments.
